About Sea – Gal

Sea-Gal is an agricultural farm that breeds tropical fish and Majhoul Dates. Since 2005 we are specializing in breeding and nurturing a variety of sweet water fish such as Mollies, Poecilia Velifera, and Poecilia Sphenops. Also breeding and nurturing of Ancistrus fish in a recycling water system. The water we use goes through a special treatment to clean them and it is reused in the Dates plantation.

Our location:

The farm is located in Idan, a small village in the Arava, a region that is part of the Jordan Rift Valley in the south of Israel, located 50km south to the dead sea and 150km north from Eilat and the red sea. The area is described as a desert area, where the weather is hot for most of the year, has low precipitation and with evolved agriculture.
The farm sits inside a date plantation, in an agricultural area that produces fruits and vegetables used mainly for export.

The high temperature, vast lands and salty water that are drawn from local wells are great for nurturing of the mollies and the dates.

What we do?

• Breeding and exporting fish
• Magic – A CO2 absorbent for exporting live fish
• Guided Tours in the fish farm and the dates plantation
• Selling and exporting of dates

Our personal story

We are the Segev family, we live in Idan and have three children, three dogs, dates and a whole lot of fish.
After our academic graduation, we have visited in the Arava (the Israeli dryland), fell in love with the place and decided to settle in and build our home.

Ran is a biologist with a B.A degree from the faculty of agriculture in Rehovot in the field of aquatic animals’ agriculture.
“Even as a child, I have always been drawn to the sea, the life in it and to scuba diving and this is the reason I have become a marine biologist”. I am well experienced in breeding of many kinds of fish and more aquatic animals, and act as a teacher in AICAT (Arava International Center for Agricultural Training), a school for foreign students.

Between the years 1997 – 2007, Ran managed the research and development division of aquaculture in the Negev and the Arava.

Ran also established the aquaculture research center in Yair station – “MOP ARAVA”.
Amongst others, Ran developed the breeding of the Australian Barramundi fish, and initiated the field of breeding marine aquarium fish (like nemo and his friends).

Sigal has M.A. degree in Botanica from the Tel-Aviv University and MBA from the Ben Gurion University. Sigal has also a diploma in fish farming from the faculty of agriculture in Rehovot.
In 2005,  we decided to follow our dream and build our own farm for breeding aquarium fish.
The business is a family business, and each of its members contributes his part.

The farm

The farm resides in a prosperous date plantation and spreads over a property sized about one dunam (about 10,000 sq.ft.). The greenhouse is divided into four main areas: two breeding areas, a fattening area – in which we nurture the fish into marketing size, and a packing room.
In our farm, we host tours for foreign students of agriculture, presenting them the breeding methods, water-recycling process, different methods of cannibalism preventing of the fish by their parents and more. We also host tours for tourists’ groups, families and others.

Breeding methods

The breeding method is quite intensive. The breeding is done in tough plastic pools in various sizes. The total volume is 240 cubic meters (8500 cu.ft.). This method holds an advantage in the health of the fish and disease prevention. Birds and other animals that could carry fish disease cannot contact the water and therefore we rarely use medicine and chemical substances during the cultivation period.

Water saving

The water in the pools are being recycled and handled with bio-filters, cleansed through UV systems and then brought back to the pools by using water pumps.

Controlled environment

The breeding in the farm is controlled and inspected throughout the year to give the best possible conditions for the fish, a temperature of 26-28 degrees Celsius is constantly monitored for optimal conditions.
In the summer, the temperature is kept with air-cooling by a moist mattress and fans, shaded with external screens and indoor thermal screens.

In the winter, the temperature is kept with heat pumps and thermal screens.

Feeding

The fish are fed with a combination of live food, brine shrimp, and dry food, a unique mixture comprised of several industrial foods and additives.
The feeding is monitored and done with a feed-robot that allocates the fish mixtures 10 times a day in a controlled amount for each breeding cell.

Packaging and shipment

The fish that we export are packed in nylon bags with water, oxygen, ammonia absorbent, blurring substance, antibiotics, and “Magic”, an exclusive special delivery substance. Shipments are in a Styrofoam crates that can hold up to six bags.

For more information regarding the “Magic”, read below in the shipping solutions section.

Shipping solutions – Magic

In order to preserve the water quality during the air shipment and prevent deterioration of the environmental conditions inside the bags, that can inflicts directly on the fish and their survival during the shipment and after it, we develop and produce in Sea-Gal a product we call: “Magic” – a CO2 absorbent.

Product description

“Magic” is made of a substance, which absorbs CO2 and is contained in a fastidious package that is penetrable to gas and impenetrable to water.

The “Magic” floats on top of the water and absorbs the CO2 that is secreted by the fish.

The “Magic” advantages

It reduces the stress of the fish during the shipment that caused by CO2 inside the packages.
It is a “green” product suitable in an ever growing trend to reduce the suffering of animals and fish.
It allows to ship larger amounts of fish in each bag and as a result, reducing to costs of the shipment.

We export our fish with “Magic”. What about your export?
If you never try, you will never know the difference.

We shall be happy to assist you in any question.
